چکیده

Efforts to reform the predoctoral curriculum are examined in light of the public’s past and future oral health needs. Three directions that may make a difference in the preparation of dentists for their professional roles are discussed: competency-based curriculum, blending dental education into the broader system of health professions education, and reform of clinical education. A blueprint for a new and different twenty-first century predoctoral curriculum is unveiled to stimulate discussion and debate within the dental education community. The last section explores the sociology of institutional change, identifies barriers to innovation, and offers recommendations for enhancing future curriculum reform efforts.
